THE OCEAN’S CRISIS IS OURS
Oceans cover over 70% of the planet’s surface and do a ton of work for us: regulating the Earth’s climate, producing over half the oxygen we breathe, and sustaining millions of lives through food, recreation, and wellbeing. Yet they bear the brunt of humanity’s exploitation too: pollution, overfishing, and climate change are eroding marine ecosystems at alarming rates—accelerating coral bleaching, biodiversity loss, and threatening coastal communities through intensifying storms, rising temperatures, and devastating weather events. This isn’t just environmental—it’s a justice issue. As oceans degrade, frontline communities and future generations face rising seas and economic instability. We are at a tipping point, and the decisions we make now will define humanity’s relationship with the planet and our oceans going forward.
OCEANS HOLD THE KEY
Despite these threats, oceans remain a beacon of hope and opportunity, presenting solutions for regeneration in their depths. Healthy marine ecosystems can sequester carbon, restore biodiversity, and drive equitable economic growth. By reimagining tourism, innovating circular products, and investing in community-led solutions, we can create models of collective ownership that promote sustainable symbiosis between people and the planet.
At Next Wave Collective, we are betting on the ocean’s potential—building initiatives that merge environmental restoration with economic empowerment, starting with marine tourism in Indonesia. The collective future is blue, and it’s ours to shape.
OUR WORK
NEXT WAVE COLLECTIVE is a social R+D Studio committed to collective resource stewardship in emerging blue economies. We practice R+D because it fuels the tangible experimentation that we need to bridge the gap between the present and our collective future.
R:Research
Our system-informed and participatory research projects dive into the challenges and opportunities for innovation in the blue economy, with a specific focus on social inclusion, ethical economics, and collective benefit.
D:Development
We collaboratively develop products and ventures like Next Wave Swimgear that will provide ocean lovers new and better alternatives while creating viable marine livelihoods in harmony with ocean health and resilience.

BLUE WAVE COLLECTIVE
COLLECTIVE OCEAN GOVERNANCE + BENEFIT
We’re researching challenges and opportunities for collective benefit in emerging blue economies. What it will take for communities to own and benefit from resources used and created by these intersecting industries? What mechanisms will best align sustainable economic growth with community wellbeing and ocean resilience?
Blue Wave Collective’s thesis is that ownership mechanisms must be innovated for collective value to be mutually aligned with both community economics and enduring ocean health.
Blue Wave Collective’s first research project focuses on the fast-growing marine tourism sector in Indonesia, where private ownership undermines local community benefit of scuba diving and surfing operations.

Next Wave Swimgear was born to create the stuff we need and couldn’t find! We’re on a mission to make durable, vibrant, and safe swimwear, surfsuits, and adventure accessories that celebrate ocean ecosystems while fueling all of our favorite water explorations.
Circular | Our innovative Blue Loop program provides a seasonal or annual subscription service to exchange your worn-out gear for recycling.
Inclusive Protection | Our unique product line fills gaps in sun, skin, AND hair protection with novel features, sustainable materials, and women-centered silhouettes designed for athletic action.
Proactive Conservation | Our collections channel profits into marine conservation, financing women and coastal communities through ethical design and production.
